Notes: BALLINA CHRONICLE Ballina, Mayo, Ireland Wednesday, Oct 3, 1849 FIRE AT THE BOHERBUOY AUXILIARY WORKHOUSE Between 11 and 12 o'clock on Friday night, it was discovered that th e Boherbuoy auxiliary workhouse was on fire. The alarm having been given b y St. Michael's Parish watch, a number of persons soon congregated in the vicin ity of the burning premises, and the fire engines of the West of England, St. Mi chael's Parish, 74th Regt. and Royal Horse Artillery, were on the ground in quic k time, but could not work for nearly an hour owing to want of water. The fire originated in the straw-house, under the infirmary, and the thick volume s of smoke which issued, nearly suffocated the inmates, who, to the number o f eleven hundred, all escaped, having been promptly aroused from sleep in their dormitories, and removed to the open yards. The flames having spread with rapidity through the buildings in the rere, two spacious wings of the establishment were soon burned to the ground, with their contents, consis ting of bedding , wearing apparel, &c.- Lieut. Col. Doyle, Colonel Cox, Lieut. Co l. Fordyce, with fatigue parties of the 74th, 3d. Buffs, and Royal Horse Art illery, rendered essential service. John Crips, Esq., J.P. and Pierce G. Barron , Esq., R.M., and City Police, under Head Constable Daly, were also in attendance . In order to prevent the fire from extending to the front premises, a 2 CON C quantity of shedding was pulled down, and at four o'clock the flames were subdued. Jo hn Westropp, Esq., is the owner of the premises which were insured by the Gu ardians in the West of England office for Ã4000. The loss sustained will not exce ed Ã200.
