Maureen Steele has been the closest to us, with prett y regular contact - she is just about the matriarch of the Crofton clan i n Johannesburg. Her brother Trevor Crofton I have sort of known vaguely over the years, m ainly as the father of Roger Crofton who is in the swimming pool construc tion business, and for whom we get many phone calls from people trying t o find him - he keeps himself ex-directory. Her sister Pam has always been a vague "name only" sort of person, wh o I must have met a number of times, but never got to know. Sadly Trevor passed away sometime on Christmas eve, and was found in hi s flat on Boxing Day. He had had a slight fall, and was not feeling too w ell, but intended to see the doctor in the new year. It turned out he die d of Pneumonia, and had he had medical attention he could have held out . He has been very frail for some time now - in his 80's - so maybe thi s was just his allotted span. We attended his funeral in Vanderbijl Par k on 31st December. We have now heard that Pam died early yesterday morning - full reasons no t yet known, but according to Clive Steele, from her condition recently s he had just lost the will to live. She also had a fall about 2 months ago , and for some reason just refused to get out of bed, in spite of havin g no actual injuries. She then just faded away. We don't yet have details on her funeral yet, but will make every effor t to represent our side of the family. I go back to work tomorrow (Monday Jan 12) after a fairly quiet holiday . We had the usual parties over the festive season, spending Christmas wi th Ethelwyn and the Crofton side of the family. Maureen was there, worrie d why Trevor had not contacted her, and she could not contact him on th e day, but otherwise a very merry bunch. Anne gets on very well with ever ybody, and brought a fresh sparkle to the crowd. New years festivities we re mainly centered around Viv's family followed up with a really beautifu l Garden wedding last weekend. I have seen 2 full cricket test matches - a long time since that was poss ible - but was also struck down a few days before Christmas with the Joha nnesburg Stomach Bug that has seen a huge number of people affected ove r the last few months. It lasts about 2 to 4 weeks in most people, so alt hough under control, I am still not feeling top fit. Hopefully the challe nges of the office will sweep out the remaining cobwebs. It did unfortuna tely make me feel a bit too off-colour to go sailing or get out and abou t too much at all for that matter, but in view of our ongoing heatwave th at is probably just as well. I don't think we have had a day under 30 deg rees since November, and no rain to speak of at all either. Anne has been keeping very busy. La Vida, the show in Pretoria finished l ast weekend, The whole Crofton clan attended. Our table was unfortunatel y right in front up against the stage so the volume was pretty thunderous . Graham Edgar, Clive, Susan & James, Ethelwyn and the boys managed OK, b ut I think it was a bit much for Maureen. The show itself was as great a s ever. Anne is now spending more "daytimes" working at the studio on her album , so we see more of her now in the evenings. She has found a part time jo b singing at Gold Reef City a few nights a week with a neighbour of ours . She started on Friday, and worked last night as well, but as she staye d with her buddies overnight we are still waiting for details on how tha t went. Apparently this guy is a pretty good contact, and can get her mor e work at various corporates(?) and other functions - enough to keep th e wolf from the door. I hope you guys had a good holiday season Will be in touch again soon Love Peter ps - Mike/Joan Please confirm which of the listed e-mail addresses is the correct one t o use TX
