In 1891 her brother Benjam in is employed as a Porter at the Workhouse. In 1901(census) Mary is sti ll working for the needy. She is a Foster Mother at the Union Cottage Hom es at 4, May Day Road, Croydon, Surrey. It is unlikely the Mary married or had children. The May Day Homes have now been demolished. (Taken from Workhouse Website) The duties of a School-master or School-mistress included: To instruct the boys and girls, for at least three hours each day, in read ing, writing, arithmetic, and the principles of the Christian Religion, a nd such other instruction as may fit them for service, and train them to h abits of usefulness, industry and virtue. To regulate the discipline and arrangements of the school, and the industr ial and moral training of the children. To accompany the children when they quit the Workhouse for exercise, or f or attendance at public worship To keep the children clean in their persons, and orderly and decorous in t heir conduct. To assist the Master and Matron respectively in maintaining due subordinat ion in the Workhouse.
