Notes: Baptised by his father, Wessel. Johannes's death was recorded in the Dagregister of the Commander of th e Cape, which was an exceptional honour in those times. Johannes was the progenitor (stamvader) of Pretorius family in South Afri ca. His father, Wessel, died while he was still a theological student. Johann es discontinued his studies at the University of Leiden and joined the Du tch East India Company. He arrived in the Cape on 1 Apr 1666 as sea cadet in the VOC. He left fo r Mauritius on 27 Jun 1666 as sick comforter and later secunde. He late r returned to the Cape on 9 Dec 1669. He worked as an assistant in 1670 and later as secretary of the orphan se rvice. He was a deacon in the Cape Town church (1677-1678). On 18 Dec 169 2 he was elected as elder in the church. He was a member of the "Burgerr aad" (1680-1681, 1692-1693). He was a member of the Marriage Council (167 7-1678, 1680-1682). On 23 Dec 1681 he was appointed as the Commissioner o f Marital Affairs and of the fire brigade. He was also a "weesmeester" (O rphan Master) in 1676. During 1676 to 1678 he received a permit on behalf of his stepchildren (S ophia and Anna Bosch) to trade in sugar beer. In 1682 he obtained a perm it to sell wine and beer in his tavern. He was also a vitner. He had a stepdaughter, Anna Elisabeth Rooleemo. It was reported that befo re and after her marriage Cupido van Bengal (a slave of Jacob Jansz van d er Voorden) had sex with her on numerous occasions.
