Notes: 1 to 5 of 5 -- answer removed -- Avatar Image ichkeria You asked a question about "the Russian enclave" earlier and I believ e I may have answered it. I assume you mean Kaliningrad by the way . Kalingrad is an exclave of Russia, but it is not an enclave, because an e nclave is situated entirely withon the boundaries of one country, and Kal inigrad lies between Poland and Lithuania . So, Kaliningrad in a Russian "exclave" . Another example of a major exclave would be Nakhichevan, an exclave of Az erbaijan separated by Armenia. 23:04 Fri 14th Oct 2011 Avatar Image xerus Question Author wow thichkeria. that explains everything. the term enclave is often used , incorrectly, for the russian exclave.......is Nakhichevan worth a visit . Kalingrad certainly is. is it the only city in the exclave? Ive heard o f a place called Koningsgrad!? 14:10 Sat 15th Oct 2011 Avatar Image ichkeria I've never been to either Kaliningrad nor Nakhichevan . Kaliningrad used to be known as Konigsberg - the city is famous for its b ridges, which were the subject of a famous problem in mathematics (can' t remember the technical term, but it's to do with being able to do a tou r of all the bridges without retracing your steps over any of them) . Interestingly, while many if not all Soviet names for Russian cities hav e reverted to their pre-Soviet names (Leningrad to St Petersburg, Sverdlo vsk to Ekaterinburg, Kuybyshev to Samara etc) Kaliningrad has remained Ka liningrad. Despite the 2 other Russian cities named after Kalinin havin g been changed back to their old names. Doubtless because the Russians wa nted to emphasise the Russian image of the exclave for outside benefit . A shame: a historic old name buried by the name of a Bolshekiv non-enti ty. 18:07 Sat 15th Oct 2011 Avatar Image ichkeria Worth pointing out also of course that Kaliningrad (Konigsberg) used to b e German, but was ethnically cleansed by the Red Army as part of their "l iberation" after WWII http://www.theanswerbank.co.uk/Society-and-Culture/Question1066332.html http://boards.ancestry.com/thread.aspx?mv=flat&m=13352&p=surnames.martin Georg Andreas Martin (called Martein) Change to Thread View Sort Oldest First Newest First Georg Andreas Martin (called Martein ) linzi_meryl (View posts) Posted: 24 Sep 2001 9:10AM GM T Classification: Query Edited: 22 Aug 2002 12:22AM GMT I am looking for members of the McComb family. My grandfather, James Grov es, came from Monaghan, Ireland. He was born in 1879 and was married twic e, once to an unknown named person and then to my grandmother, Maria Alet ta McComb in 1920. My grandmother came from the Cradock area . My great grandmother was Maria Petronella Martin (1864-1953) and her moth er was Maria Petronella van Heerden, who married George Andreas Martin (1 829-1906). George was the son of Georg Andreas Martin (born 1790) and Ger brecht Levina Olivier. They all came from the Cradock area of South Afric a. Georg Andreas Martin was a missionary who came from Ko(e)nigburg in th e old Germany. They lived on a farm clled Ryerspoort in the Cradock distri ct. He could also have been a minister of the church. Olive Schreiner wh o wrote (Life on an) African Farm was nursemaid to his children. If you have any information, I would appreciate hearing about it. Thank you. On the off chance, I searched on P etronella van Heerden (my own grandmother and great grandmothers were Els ie Petronella Elizabeth van Heerden)and came upon your message. If it is any comfort to you, I have just recently read about the Martin s and their connection with Van Heerden and Olive Schreiner of the Cradoc k region in an autobiography of the late Prof Guy Butler of Rhodes Univer sity in SA. Quite co-incidental to see your interest. Good Luck with you r research! Just for interest - Our surname is Martin, and Martinus Jacobus Martin so n of Johannes Lodewyk led a pioneering "Trek" to what was Rhodesia in 189 4. Guest Name: Linzi Meryl Date: 09/10/2001 Comments Hi, I can't get into your database so I am asking whether you have detail s for Maria (born circa1830) Martin, who married a Potgieter from the Cra dock area and had one child called Polly. I am a direct decendent of Maria Petronella van Heerden who was the daugh ter of Willem Jacobus van Heerden and Elizabeth Catharina van Heerden (he r maiden name). She married George Andreas Martin, who was the son of Geor g Andreas Martin and Gerbrecht Levina Olivier. I think we might be resear ching the same family. I am trying to put my family tree on Ancestral Quest so I can produce Ged com files to share with others. At present my tree is a handwritten thin g on a A4 x 4 sheets taped together. I have definate dates for 1860 onwar ds. Response: I use to host “the Pretorius website” on XOOM.com, but they di scontinued the free service. Had to take the plunge and register a .inf o site. With the help of my employer, McCarthy OnLine, I could relaunch t he website. In order to keep costs down, I will no longer be able to publ ish non-Pretorius information. I am still negotiating making the GED file s available on our website. Königsberg was changed to Kaliningrad
