In 1861(census) Jane is still unmarried and living with h er father and brother at the Wheatsheaf Inn in Old. She is describ ed as a Housekeeper. In 1871(census) Jane is a visitor at 5, Downs Crescen t, Hackney, London, the home of Sarah Gilbert, a widowed retired publica n. Another visitor is 4 year old Edward Reed! There must be a link to the Reeds. On census night ten years earlier in 18 61 16-year-old Elizabeth Read (The spelling could be Reed) was a visit or in Old. (The writing on the census is not brilliant and the surname may not be exa ctly 'Read'. Elizabeth must be the daughter of Ann, Elizabeth or Sophia. E xtensive searching of the 1851, 1861and 1871 census cannot find a defini te link. Many different surname spellings and birth and date options produ ced nothing positive!)
