Notes: Matilda Mitchell was born in 1843, at Long Melford, Suffolk to Benjam in & Mary Ann Mitchell. In 1851(census) Matilda is living on Bridge St wi th her Parents & Siblings. In 1861(Census) it appears that Matilda is 22y rs is working as a Housemaid at the Euston Hotel, St Pancras, London, h er place of birth is given as Bury St Edmunds. By 1865 Matilda has return ed to Long Melford, she has an illegitimate Son with Elijah Otley an Ar my Pensioner. Matilda then marries Elderly James Palmer at Thorpe Morieu x, Suffolk and in 1871(census) Matilda (who's age is given as 25yrs) is li ving on Arms Green with her Husband & two Sons. Matilda's Husband dies on 25th November 1874 at Bradfield St George, Su ffolk, however in the 1881(census) Matilda & her Children have been admitt ed into the Sudbury Workhouse as Casuals (whilst her eldest son is an Apre ntice) she also has a man with her she claims is her husband and is also c laiming that the children were born at the same place as her 'husband' b ut this is untrue, she is also pregnant at this time with another chi ld as on May 27th she gives birth to another child George at the Thingoe u nion Workhouse the Father's name is left blank on the Birth cer In 1891 (Census) Matilda is 46yrs old, she is living at 5 Weasel Cou rt College Street, Bury St Edmunds with her three youngest Children a nd is a Horse hair Weaver. In 1901 (census) Matilda's age is given as 60yr s, she is living at 13 Connells Coast Court, with her Daughter Alice, S on William & two Nephews. Matilda is a Char Woman as is her Daugther. Al so the house nextdoor is condemed by the Local Authorites, and all but t he older Nephew have and infirmaty ticked in the Census Box.
