Rider Haggard and his Daughter Lilias w as her bestfriend, she went to Africa durring the Boer War and became a nu rse in her mid-teens, Her future husband then became engaged to another wo man but on learning Maud was about to return to England he broke it off, s he married on 29/03/1910 when she returned to England aged 23yrs, died ag ed 72yrs, Buried at Swainsthorpe Church, Norfolk. Was known to donate fo od parcels to the poor & needy in local Village. Was also a member of t he British Israelites.Birth registry (6a,611). Cousin and wife of Edgar Kn ight, and niece of Sarah Britten. Maud's godfather was the author H.Rider Haggard, whose daughter Lilias w as her best friend. According to the Passenger Refference she travelled f rom Liverpool on the 26 October 1905 to Cape South Africa on the Sidney Bo und 'Persic'. The Ship was 10559Square Feet, 7820 Tonnage and had 312 Pass engers, The Ships Master's name was F E Beadnell. Aged 18yrs old, she we nt to South Africa to become a nurse and was caught up in the Bhambatha Up rising in South Africa 1906. It is believed that Edgar and Maud had been s weethearts in their teens, but when Maud was in South Africa Edgar beca me engaged to a lady called Dolly, whose father ran the Ascot racecours e. He was about to travel to make the final wedding plans when he discover ed Maud was returning to England. He promptly broke off the engagement a nd married Maud instead. It is thought that the couple had two more children, both of whom died you ng, between Elizabeth and Phillip. Maud was baptised on Sep 8, 1887, Walgrave, Northants. She was known to do nate food parcels to the poor in the local village. She was a member of t he British Israelites. Buried at Swainsthorpe Church, Norfolk In 1911(census) Maude is living in Old with her Husband & Servant she is 2 3yrs old.
