Notes: William Henry Herring was born on 25th July 1825,in Cambridge he was the S on of William & Elizabeth Herring. William was christened on the 19th Augu st 1825 at St Andrew the Great Church in Cambridge. William appea rs to be untracable in the 1841 census as there are alot of young bo ys of 15 who match his details. Also at some point before 1851 he has join ed the Royal Marines, and was stationed on Acention Island off the Afric an Coast. There he met Elizabeth Perkins and they were married there on No vember 24th 1851 at St Mary's Church, by the Chaplain William Pilche r. At the time of William's Marriage he was a Sargent. Shortly after t he Marriage William, his Wife & In-Laws had to return to England as Wittne sses in the 'Murder' Trial of his Brother in Law Thomas Peel who stood acc used of Murdering his Father in Law John Perkins (Elizabeth's Father) t he couple returned to Ascention shortly before the birth of their Eldest D aughter. Between 1854 & 1856 the Herrings returned to England. By 1861 (ce nsus) aged 35yrs William is back in England with his family he is a Barra ck Sargent in the Royal Marines, and is living in the RM officer's Barrac ks, Chatham Royal Dockyard, Kent, with his family. In 1871 (census) 45yr o ld William has been promoted to Quartermaster, he has moved out of the Doc kyard and is living at 3 Whittaker Terrace, Chatham with his wife, Childr en & livein Servant 18yr old Emma Payne. However in 1873 one of William 's Daughters dies aged 10yrs old, and by 1881 (census) William aged 55yr s, his wife & the four youngest Children have moved to Walmer in Kent, th ey are living in the North Barracks and William is a Quarter Master ther e, the family also have a 15yr old servant living with them. The family th en Appear to have moved to Essex as William's Wife Elizabeth died in Lexde n, Colchester, Essex in 1886 & William married Mary Jane Cross between Oct ober & December of 1888 in Lexden. By 1891 (census) William & his new wi fe had moved to Moses Villa in West Bergolt with his youngest Daughter, W illiam is now 65yrs old & is a retired Major Royal Marines. However in 19 01 (census) 75yr old William & his wife have moved back to Kent he is livi ng at 120 Faversham Rd, Kennington St Mary's, William Died between Octob er & December 1905 in Kennington St Mary's, Kent, he was 80yrs old. William appears on a list of Quarter Masters on Retired pay it appears th at he gained the Rank of Quartermaster on 4th November 1868, he then retir es at the Honorary Rank of Captain in July of 1881, when it appears he m ay have moved to Essex, and then gains the Honorary Rank of Major on 4th J uly 1883.
