Samuel's father died in 1869 so in 1871(censu s) he is 14yrs old and still at school and living with his mother and t wo siblings in Walgrave. Samuel Married local school Mistress Sarah Elizab eth Britten in Walgrave on 10th January 1881, the couple then move to t he Corner house, a farm in Old (formerly Wold) Northamptonshire, in the 18 81 census he and his new wife are settled there, Samuel now 24yrs o ld is a Master Butcher. In 1901(census) shows Samuel and sons Francis and E dgar with Samuel's brother, Thomas, in Walgrave, whilst Sarah is in the ma rital home, in Old with the younger children. The Corner House was still t he family home in 1917 and was eventually passed to Sam's Daughter Agne s. Samuel is now a Butcher and cattle dealer. Why Samuel and Sarah were ap art in 1901 is not known but it appears to be temporary, Samuel is list ed in Kelly's Directory 1910 & 1914, as a Farmer. In 1911(Census) Samu el is 54yrs old, he is a Cattle Dealer and is still living with his Wi fe & two youngest Children at the Corner House in Old. Always known as Sam - or Mr. Sam - he had a reputation as a miser. He trea ted his wife badly, and later his sister Emmelia too when she lived with h im briefly after her retirement. He had a running rivalry with his broth er Alfred, also a butcher, mainly over a horse. Alfred had a faster hor se and on market days the two would race the 10 miles between Northampt on and Old. Alfred would always stop at a pub en route to have a drink, st ill overtaking Sam again to reach market first. It is said that Sam stat ed that if ever he saw Alfred lying in a ditch he would leave him the re to rot.
